Thus far, we’ve discussed the roadmap to courtship, but today we’ll shift our focus to a more practical matter: how to dress for a fit.

While appearances shouldn’t be the primary focus in a traditional courtship, the way you present yourself to a potential partner will – for better or worse – nonverbally communicate what your intentions are and how invested you are in the relationship. As such, it’s important to put your best foot forward by dressing in a way that conveys your interest and appreciation for your partner’s company and time.

The Basics

The way you dress will depend in large part on where you and your partner will be going and what you will be doing. If you’re not sure of what would be appropriate to wear when consider the following suggestions:

  • When going on a casual date, such as a coffee date or a picnic, opt for a clean and well-fitting pair of jeans. A straight fit is best; avoid skinny styles or jeggings. Pair this with either a polo or a V-neck T-shirt, and you’re good to go.
  • For a semi-casual affair, trade in the jeans for dress pants or khakis and pair that with a fitted button-down shirt. The more formal the date, the more elements you’ll add to this starting point. Use a blazer to elevate your look for an elegant dinner date, and add a tie for the most formal of events.
  • When it comes to colors unless you’re confident working with bold shades or already have a defined sense of style, stick to a palette of navy, gray, cream, and an accent color of choice, such as hunter green or deep purple. Patterns can also add visual intrigue. Choose smaller shapes and lower contrast colors to get started.

Finishing Touches

Glasses can also be a way to infuse some personality into your outfit. Classic wire-rimmed frames convey a sense of seriousness and formality, while thicker acetate frames read more modern and playful, depending on their color and shape.

Finally, don’t forget about your hair. Even the most well-styled ensemble will fall flat if paired with an unruly do. If you’re unsure of where to start, a crew cut or ivy league cut both offer a classic look, but don’t feel limited by these options. A good barber can suggest what will work best with your hair’s natural texture. If you prefer to wear a beard, be sure to maintain it with regular shaping to keep it from appearing unkempt. If not, a clean shave is always in style.

The Bottom Line

Regardless of what kind of style you choose to adopt, investing some time and thought into your appearance will convey to your partner that she is worth the effort and that you’re serious about her and your relationship.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of Catholic courtship is its singularity of purpose. Courtship leads to marriage – period! Far from engaging in dating for the sake of mere fun or companionship, a man intentionally pursuing the path of courtship knows that his destination is a holy and loving marriage with a virtuous woman of faith.

Foundation of Intentionality and Spiritual Discernment

The primary goal of courtship is evident—to pave the way to a sanctified and loving marriage. Those who follow the purposeful path of courtship are well aware that their actions and decisions must mirror their Holy aspiration. It’s not merely about finding someone to share life with; it’s about discovering a partner with whom to fulfill God’s purpose.

As such, the journey is inherently marked by earnest intentionality with both partners devoting themselves to deeper prayer as they seek to discover and submit to God’s will for their lives. Such devotion ensures that the foundation of their potential marriage is firm, built on the tenets of faith and divine guidance. Should they eventually marry, their unity will act as a visible testament to His love and guidance, drawing others to the Lord simply by living out the beauty and dignity of their holy, God-centered marriage.

Cultivating a Relationship Rooted in Faith

How can a man nurture a relationship that truly reflects this kind of faith-first approach? Here are three pivotal practices that can enrich a faith-centered courtship:

  • Approach Courtship as a Journey of Discovery: View courtship as a valuable period of learning and mutual exploration. Men shouldn’t try to rush the journey any more than they should intentionally delay its progress. Rushing towards marriage or delaying commitment without reason can detract from understanding God’s timing. Appreciate each phase of your relationship and, in doing so, assess the readiness and compatibility for a lifelong commitment.
  • Prioritize Prayer and Spiritual Unity: Bringing God into your relationship through prayer is fundamental. By bringing their courtship to prayer, couples demonstrate a willingness to consult with God and submit to His designs. Praying both individually and as a couple fosters a closer connection to divine guidance, keeping the relationship aligned with God’s will. This spiritual practice strengthens the bond and underlines a commitment to following His will.
  • Foster Open and Respectful Communication: Regular, open discussions about feelings and expectations are crucial. Respectfully inquire about your partner’s perspectives on the relationship and spiritual discernment. These conversations are vital as they contribute to a deeper understanding and respect for each other’s views and wishes. Regardless of what may be expressed during these conversations, be sure to always respond to your partner with kindness, compassion, and composure.

By committing to a faith-centered journey with a clear understanding of the purpose of courtship, a man can set the stage for a profound and impactful union that transcends personal fulfillment, reaching into the spiritual enrichment of their future family.

In a world where fleeting connections and disposable relationships are common, traditional courtship stands out for its timeless values, especially in the context of the Catholic faith. This intentional approach to relationships appeals particularly to conservative Catholics who prioritize marriage and seek a spouse aligned with their beliefs. Unlike casual dating, courtship focuses on building a faith-centered connection that leads to a meaningful, God-given marriage.

In a world of fleeting connections and disposable relationships, the timeless values of traditional courtship hold immense significance, especially within the context of the Catholic faith. Courtship offers a unique appeal for conservative Catholics who are serious about marriage and ready to find their spouse. In contrast to casual dating, courtship is the intentional pursuit of a faith-centered relationship that ultimately leads to a God-given marriage.

In this series, we’ll look at the concept of courtship from a specifically male perspective. What is a man’s role in traditional courtship? How can men lead the way in their relationships, giving women the space and consideration they need to embrace virtue and femininity? What are the qualities of traditional courtship, and what can a man expect from the experience? We’ll cover all this and more in Leading the Way: A Man’s Role in Traditional Courtship.

Preparing for the Journey

Before you begin to court a virtuous woman or consider yourself ready for courtship, you must first determine if you’re ready. Consider these questions:

  • Am I desirous of a lifelong commitment, or does that feel far off somewhere in the future?
  • Do I want children? Am I ready to begin my journey toward marriage and family?
  • Am I financially secure? Do I have a stable income? Am I prepared to take on multiple jobs if needed in order to provide for my future wife and children?
  • Am I emotionally detached from my previous relationships? Can I approach the woman I intend to court without superimposing others’ past actions toward me onto her?
  • Am I strong and rooted in my faith? Am I comfortable with the idea of becoming the spiritual head of my future family? Do I have faithful friends, couples, or mentors to guide me along the way?

If you answered yes to these questions, congratulations! You are ready to embark on the journey of courtship.
