One of the distinguishing characteristics of Catholic courtship is its singularity of purpose. Courtship leads to marriage – period! Far from engaging in dating for the sake of mere fun or companionship, a man intentionally pursuing the path of courtship knows that his destination is a holy and loving marriage with a virtuous woman of faith.

Foundation of Intentionality and Spiritual Discernment

The primary goal of courtship is evident—to pave the way to a sanctified and loving marriage. Those who follow the purposeful path of courtship are well aware that their actions and decisions must mirror their Holy aspiration. It’s not merely about finding someone to share life with; it’s about discovering a partner with whom to fulfill God’s purpose.

As such, the journey is inherently marked by earnest intentionality with both partners devoting themselves to deeper prayer as they seek to discover and submit to God’s will for their lives. Such devotion ensures that the foundation of their potential marriage is firm, built on the tenets of faith and divine guidance. Should they eventually marry, their unity will act as a visible testament to His love and guidance, drawing others to the Lord simply by living out the beauty and dignity of their holy, God-centered marriage.

Cultivating a Relationship Rooted in Faith

How can a man nurture a relationship that truly reflects this kind of faith-first approach? Here are three pivotal practices that can enrich a faith-centered courtship:

    • Approach Courtship as a Journey of Discovery: View courtship as a valuable period of learning and mutual exploration. Men shouldn’t try to rush the journey any more than they should intentionally delay its progress. Rushing towards marriage or delaying commitment without reason can detract from understanding God’s timing. Appreciate each phase of your relationship and, in doing so, assess the readiness and compatibility for a lifelong commitment.
    • Prioritize Prayer and Spiritual Unity: Bringing God into your relationship through prayer is fundamental. By bringing their courtship to prayer, couples demonstrate a willingness to consult with God and submit to His designs. Praying both individually and as a couple fosters a closer connection to divine guidance, keeping the relationship aligned with God’s will. This spiritual practice strengthens the bond and underlines a commitment to following His will.
    • Foster Open and Respectful Communication: Regular, open discussions about feelings and expectations are crucial. Respectfully inquire about your partner’s perspectives on the relationship and spiritual discernment. These conversations are vital as they contribute to a deeper understanding and respect for each other’s views and wishes. Regardless of what may be expressed during these conversations, be sure to always respond to your partner with kindness, compassion, and composure.

By committing to a faith-centered journey with a clear understanding of the purpose of courtship, a man can set the stage for a profound and impactful union that transcends personal fulfillment, reaching into the spiritual enrichment of their future family.
