Thus far, we’ve discussed the roadmap to courtship, but today we’ll shift our focus to a more practical matter: how to dress for a fit.

While appearances shouldn’t be the primary focus in a traditional courtship, the way you present yourself to a potential partner will – for better or worse – nonverbally communicate what your intentions are and how invested you are in the relationship. As such, it’s important to put your best foot forward by dressing in a way that conveys your interest and appreciation for your partner’s company and time.

    The Basics

The way you dress will depend in large part on where you and your partner will be going and what you will be doing. If you’re not sure of what would be appropriate to wear when consider the following suggestions:

    • When going on a casual date, such as a coffee date or a picnic, opt for a clean and well-fitting pair of jeans. A straight fit is best; avoid skinny styles or jeggings. Pair this with either a polo or a V-neck T-shirt, and you’re good to go.
    • For a semi-casual affair, trade in the jeans for dress pants or khakis and pair that with a fitted button-down shirt. The more formal the date, the more elements you’ll add to this starting point. Use a blazer to elevate your look for an elegant dinner date, and add a tie for the most formal of events.
    • When it comes to colors unless you’re confident working with bold shades or already have a defined sense of style, stick to a palette of navy, gray, cream, and an accent color of choice, such as hunter green or deep purple. Patterns can also add visual intrigue. Choose smaller shapes and lower contrast colors to get started.

    Finishing Touches

Glasses can also be a way to infuse some personality into your outfit. Classic wire-rimmed frames convey a sense of seriousness and formality, while thicker acetate frames read more modern and playful, depending on their color and shape.

Finally, don’t forget about your hair. Even the most well-styled ensemble will fall flat if paired with an unruly do. If you’re unsure of where to start, a crew cut or ivy league cut both offer a classic look, but don’t feel limited by these options. A good barber can suggest what will work best with your hair’s natural texture. If you prefer to wear a beard, be sure to maintain it with regular shaping to keep it from appearing unkempt. If not, a clean shave is always in style.

    The Bottom Line

Regardless of what kind of style you choose to adopt, investing some time and thought into your appearance will convey to your partner that she is worth the effort and that you’re serious about her and your relationship.
